Mist and Magic at Buttermere Buttermere has long been one of my favourite valleys in the Lake District. While it can draw heavy crowds in Summer, come Autumn and Winter it becomes a much quieter and more contemplative place, perfect for photography. Recently I enjoyed what might be my best morning behind the camera since a trip to Blea Tarn back in May 2025. The forecast promised very light winds, and with the chance of still reflections, autumn colour, and perhaps even some morning mist, I couldn’t resist heading back to Buttermere after far too long away. As usual, I arrived far too early. It was still pitch black when I parked up at Gatesgarth, so I lingered over a coffee before making the leisurely walk down to the lake shore. My mind drifted with anticipation of what the morning might bring, until the haunting cry of Tawny Owls from the woods snapped me back to the present. A fitting soundtrack to the start of the day. When I reached the shoreline, the sky was stil...

2025 Heather Season Every year I love to photograph the blooming heather in the Lake District, which normally occurs in August. This year due to the dry weather we have been experiencing the heather has been a little patchy which has made the search challenging. However, I have still managed a few decent images at Grange Fell, Lingmoor Fell and Holme Fell.                                                                            Lingmoor Fell                                                                                                      ...

Seeking Perfection: When Is Enough, Enough? I’m always chasing the perfect shot, sometimes to the point of obsession. I’ll revisit a location time and time again, hoping to catch it in the perfect light, the perfect moment, the perfect mood. Sound familiar? For me, one place embodies this pursuit more than any other - Warnscale Bothy in Buttermere, tucked away in the Lake District. I first discovered this location   when I took up photography seriously during the lockdown in 2020 (remember those days?). I saw a breathtaking photo of the Bothy at sunset, glowing under golden light, and I was hooked. I had to try capturing that magic for myself. But there's a catch, to get that golden light streaming into the Bothy at just the right angle, there's only a narrow window of opportunity: June, when the sun sets in just the right position. So once a year, I return, hoping the weather plays ball and the elements align. In June 2024, I finally got a shot I was incredibly ha...

The Allure of Blea Tarn for Landscape Photography   Blea Tarn is situated in a small hanging valley between Great Langdale and Little Langdale in the heart of the Lake District. Glacial ice moving over the col from nearby Great Langdale shaped the tarn back in the Ice Age. Blea Tarn is a popular haunt of many Lake District landscape photographer’s including, over recent years, myself. Since I started photography in 2020, I have visited Blea Tarn many times, and it is has become one of my favourite locations in the Lake District for Landscape Photography. Blea Tarn is a place where I go to for tranquillity and peace, and as such I now only go there very early for sunrise or very late for the incredible dark skies. I have a very strong sense of belonging to Blea Tarn which I think is connected to the iconic view of the rugged Langdale Pikes in the background, which brings back many memories of hiking the Pikes when I was a youngster with my late father, and later, fabulous day...
